The argument in favor of using filler text goes something like this: If you use any real content in the Consulting Process anytime you reach.

A comfort toy — a soft rabbit, a muslin square, a small blanket with a satin edge — does a very specific job. It gives a child something familiar to hold when the world feels big: the first morning at nursery, a night in a strange bed, a trip to the doctor, the arrival of a new sibling. The smell, the weight and the texture all say home in a way that words cannot.
Parents often introduce a comfort toy too late — on the day it is suddenly needed. The trick is to build the attachment gradually, during ordinary, settled moments, so the toy carries the memory of calm rather than the memory of a crisis. Done well, this takes a few weeks rather than a single afternoon.
Before a child falls for a toy, make sure it can survive the years ahead of it.
The strongest attachments are chosen, not assigned. Offer two or three suitable soft toys in a quiet moment — on the floor, at eye level, with no rush — and watch. Some babies will reach for the one that rustles; others will nuzzle the one that is silkiest. If they show no interest, wait a week and try again with a different trio.
If your child ignores soft toys entirely and instead cuddles a muslin, a small blanket or a knitted square, that is a perfectly good comfort object. Follow their lead rather than steering them back. You will also find that some children choose the toy themselves at eighteen months after weeks of indifference — the bond often strengthens once they can walk and carry it about independently.
Attachment grows through repetition, not drama. Use the toy in the moments when your child is already relaxed, and it will quietly become part of the furniture of their day.
Avoid handing it over only when something unpleasant is happening. If the toy always appears at injections and goodbyes, it becomes a signal that something is wrong.
This is the single piece of advice most parents wish they had followed: buy two identical toys on the same day. In the UK, a spare is often the difference between a settled night and a three-hour ordeal after a lost toy.
Rotate them weekly rather than keeping one pristine in a cupboard. Alternating means both wear at the same rate, both smell the same, and both feel equally familiar. A brand-new replacement handed over during a crisis is usually rejected outright — it is too clean, too stiff and unmistakably not the real thing.
If your child is old enough to notice, give the spare a name of its own and treat it as a sibling. For a baby, simply switch them without comment while the toy is in the wash.
Wash the toy at 30°C on a gentle cycle, in a pillowcase or laundry bag to protect the stitching, then air dry away from direct heat. Never tumble dry on a high setting — it can melt synthetic filling and warp the shape. Wash both copies on the same schedule so they age together.
Before going out, write your phone number on a fabric label and stitch or iron it inside. A comfort toy left on a bus or in a supermarket trolley has a far better chance of coming home if it can be identified.
For overnight trips, pack the toy in the bag your child carries, and take a photograph of it before you leave. That photo is quietly useful for lost-property enquiries. If the toy is genuinely gone, do not pretend the spare is the same one; simply say, gently and without fuss, that this is the other one, and that you know it feels different. Offer a cuddle, keep the routine the same, and give it a few days.
Above all, let the attachment unfold at its own pace. A comfort toy is not a dummy to be weaned off, nor a sign of weakness. It is a small, portable piece of home — and one of the kindest things you can hand a child on their way out into the world.
