Why a soft toy earns its place in a newborn's room

New parents are given a great deal in the first few weeks: tiny clothes in the wrong size, gadgets with more parts than a bicycle, and a mountain of muslin squares. What tends to survive the first year is simpler. A really good soft toy works quietly in the background — it distracts a fractious baby during a nappy change, sits prettily on a shelf when the room is finally tidy, and gives a tired parent something soft to hold during a 3am feed.

The catch is that not all plush is made equal. Some of it is beautiful but impossible to clean. Some of it is covered in small parts that have no business near a newborn. If you want your gift to be used rather than politely stored away, it pays to be specific about what you choose.

Washability comes before charm

Every plush toy entering a house with a newborn should be machine washable at 30°C. This is not fussiness. Milk, posseting, nappy incidents, a curious dog and a jammy-handed older sibling will all find it eventually, and a toy that can only be surface-wiped will end up out of reach on a high shelf.

Embroidered faces, safe seams and no loose parts

Plastic eyes and glued-on noses are the classic weak point on a soft toy. They can work loose with repeated washing and chewing, and they are exactly the sort of small part a baby will find. Look for embroidered or stitched features instead, particularly if the toy is intended for a baby under a year. Run a thumb along the seams — they should feel tight, with no stray threads or escaping filling.

Check the label for a UKCA or CE mark and an age recommendation. Ribbons, long cords and detachable tags should be avoided for unsupervised play, and anything with a long string is best given a miss entirely.

• Prefer natural fibres where you can — they tend to soften with washing rather than pill.
• Look for filling that is securely stitched inside a lining, not loose in the outer shell.

Gentle rattles and quiet sensory details

A soft rattle is a lovely addition, provided the sound is gentle. Look for a quiet internal chime or a fabric-covered rattle rather than anything electronic or battery operated. A wooden ring attached to a fabric body is a classic for good reason: easy for small hands to grasp from around three months, and pleasant for sleep-deprived adults to listen to on repeat.

• Crinkle panels and textured patches reward a baby's first grabs and encourage tummy-time interest.
• Short, securely stitched ribbon tags are fine for supervised play, but should never go in the cot.
• A high-contrast pattern on the reverse is worth seeking out, as newborns see bold shapes long before they see pastel ones.

Making the gift land well

The wrapping matters far less than the practical extras. A few small additions turn a nice toy into something a parent genuinely thanks you for.

• Pair the toy with a couple of muslin squares and a mesh laundry bag, so it can go straight in the wash without a hunt for supplies.
• Include a short handwritten note with the washing instructions. At 4am, that is worth more than a card.
• If there is an older sibling, a small matching plush avoids the "everything is for the baby" problem.
• Choose a size that fits a changing bag or pram basket — roughly 20 to 25cm is the sweet spot.

Finally, remember that a plush toy can be a comfort for the parent too. Something to hold during a long night feed, or to press against a shoulder while winding, earns its keep in a way a decorative ornament never will. Choose one that feels lovely in an adult hand as well as a small one, and you have found a gift worth giving.
